You want to innovate with your company and respond to the latest trends, insights and equipment. The world doesn't stand still, so neither should you. Your latest product relies on 3D computer vision for its success. Reliable, precise, flexible and according to the highest quality requirements. Become the company that always leads the way in optical 3D measurement quality.
One of the technical marvels that is made possible by A.I, Artificial Intelligence, is monocular depth estimation. This technique requires only the view of one camera as input and outputs an estimate of the 3D shapes of the objects in the scene through the use of a trained Neural Network. The photo shows remarkable results from Apple' Depth Pro.
Laser line triangulation is a more traditional approach to 3D vision is generating a 3D image by means of projecting a laser line onto an object and measure the deformation of the projected laser line as a function of the object' shape. A camera working on the principle of Time-of-Flight, sends many light pulses toward an object to be scanned and measures the time taken for the light to bounce back. Difference in time is therefore a measure of the 3D shape of an object. Stereo Vision is based upon the way we see the 3D world around us with our eyes. Depth is perceived as the amount of 'shift' of the left eye image relative to the right eye image. Measuring this shift gives the 3D shape of an object.
Laser Line Triangulation, Time-of-Flight and Stereo Vision are well understood by the mathematics involved. The math and principles behind these methods are exact and well defined and implemented in various systems. Understanding the math behind the systems not only leads to a better understanding of a particular solution, but also to ways for improvement and innovation.
One such modern product that can benefit from 3D computer vision is a flying drone. Typical use cases for 3D vision on such a platform are navigating by comparing a pre-stored map of the terrain with data coming from the camera when e.g. no GPS is available (GPS denied navigation) and obstacle avoidance by planning a path around a detected obstacle.
